Wedding Planning: Top Tips For A Stress-Free Experience

Wedding planning season has officially begun! November - February is engagement season, and now is the time to begin planning a wedding. For couples just beginning their journey, we've compiled our top tips for a stress-free wedding planning experience. The right foundation will make all the difference when it comes to enjoying the planning process.

Set A Budget!

Even if you end up changing plans or budgets, talking about money is a good start. Your wedding does not have to be a financial burden to be magical, but I want you to prepare yourself for the cost of the event. It is just like buying a car. If you were expecting a Mercedes on a Honda budget, you would experience sticker shock.

You should start with the Easy Budget. Depending on your number of guests and estimated funds, you can determine where they will most likely be spent.

Schedule a date:

  • It's time for you to pick a date now that you have all your finances in order! Here are a few ways to go about choosing a date.

  • Dream date - it is all the rage to pick a date with numeric significance. When you have your budget set and begin your venue search looking for your dream date, you'll be more prepared for the potential challenges of scheduling on a trendy day.

  • Engagement length - where are you in your engagement journey? Traditional venues often book 12 - 18 months in advance, and sometimes even longer if it is a popular or historical site. You will have access to a larger selection if you plan ahead and save money.

  • Do you have a limited budget? Monday - Thursday are always less crowded than Friday - Sunday. Consider a breakfast, brunch, or lunch ceremony/reception mid-week.

  • The peak wedding season tends to be more expensive. The busiest wedding months are April, May, September, and October, and vendors do charge accordingly. If possible, avoid peak season to save money on your venue and vendors.

Get Organized!

Organize the event into major sections, according to chronological order, in a three-ring binder. You won't need a florist until you have a design, so no rush to book an officiant before you have a venue. By completing the checklist in order, you will save hours of frustration and stress. Consider the event in this order.

  • When does it take place? (Choose your preferred date.)
  • Who do you want to be there? (Confirm your guest count to determine your venue options)
  • Where will it be held? (Confirm the venue)
  • How will it look? (The wedding design drives every aspect of the event experience (pick entertainment, invites, etc. (before picking the wedding design)
  • How will we proceed? (Traditions, rites, dances, toasts - these all influence the layout of the event and the types of vendors that must be confirmed)
  • How will we notify people? (i.e. invitations, website, etc.)
  • Who will attend? (RSVPs and final payments)

Get Help!

As you plan the DIY wedding, I suggest getting a close friend or family member to help you with the details on the big day. Organizing your wedding day and having a clear vision of your big day will make you a superb candidate for the DIY strategy, but when it comes to your big day, you'll want to hand over the reins so you can enjoy the moment. You will need someone to coordinate with your vendors on your behalf and to manage the timeline of events, so I recommend either a professional or a friend or family member that is willing to jump in.

Those couples that wish to be more hands-off or need guidance should contact a wedding planner or designer as soon as they know their date or shortly after booking their venue (some venues include a full-service planner). Engaging your wedding planner early on will ensure your wedding design and event are seamless. Our tips for a stress-free wedding planning experience will assist you on your long wedding planning journey.
